While Haiti was the first nation to obtain its independence after a revolution which simultaneously lifted the bonds of slavery and colonialism, it is today the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. With over a million Haitians currently residing in the United States, Eritaj was founded and is directed by native Haitian Mirlande Butler to help strengthen democracy and reduce poverty and disease in Haiti while creating alliances between Haitian nationals and the Haitian and African American communities in the US. Eritaj Foundation currently supports the work of five not-for-profit community agencies in Haiti with grants ranging from $100 to $1000. In addition, the Foundation seeks to promote Haitian culture in the United States and reduce the historical sense of isolation deeply felt by many Haitians. A charitable, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, Eritaj is dedicated to promoting cultural exchange between American and Haitian communities. Eritaj (which is the Haitian Creole word for “heritage”) is run exclusively by volunteers and seeks to partner with local organizations, regional and international foundations, building on common ground and mutual interests. In Massachusetts, Eritaj is working with African American and Haitian youths to offer an exchange program to low-income teens and promote an ongoing dialogue between cultures. As Eritaj seeks to develop innovative models of partnership with local philanthropic communities and artists, the use of jazz to bind African-American culture with its Haitian counterpart is a symbol of the unity that exists between the two groups despite their differences and unique histories, and opens an avenue of discourse between African American and Haitian ethnic groups. I’m honored that Eritaj invited me to participate in their work through the creation of a benefit CD. A portion of the proceeds from each CD sold are given directly to Eritaj to support their ongoing work for justice and opportunity.
